Report by Richard Lord 13 boats entered for this prestigious event at 3 Rivers Radio…
Ten skippers from four clubs entered the M&S RM District Championship, held at Three Rivers RYC on 27 February. PRO Jim Davis called the competitors together at 09.45 for a briefing, explaining that he hoped to complete sixteen races to allow three discards; sailing was to be as a single fleet with Peter Constable and Steve Poole acting as observers/scorers. Jim set a conventional triangle and sausage course that allowed a good beat to the first mark. All boats carried top rig for the first race which started in bright sunshine.
Colin Trower from Hampton Court MYC took line honours in the first race with Peter Popham from Three Rivers RYC and Martin Crysell from Guildford MYC taking the first place in the second and third races respectively. Colin edged ahead in the remaining four races before lunch was taken but Peter and Martin were not far behind and all were in with a good chance for the Championship. As the morning went on, the weather deteriorated, the wind increased to the top limit of A rig and then the rain started to fall. Racing started in the afternoon in cold, miserable conditions but this did not affect Martin Crysell who started the afternoon session with two wins. Colin Trower suffered battery failure in the second race after lunch but came back immediately to score four wins and a second place in the next four races.
The wind dropped shortly after lunch but not before Hugh McAdoo’s Prime Number lost a deck patch on its way back to the bank and sank. The boat was soon recovered but Hugh’s race was finished. John Shorrock from Reading SC and John Carter of Three Rivers RYC also suffered boat failures shortly after lunch and retired as did Dave Andrews from Hampton Court MYC.
Martin Crysell won the last two races but this was not enough to take first place from Colin Trower who finished with a score of 21 after taking three discards with Martin on 25 after his three discards. Third place went to Peter Popham a little way behind with a net score of 45.
